Senior Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (EC&I) Engineer

Leading Nuclear Services Company | Hybrid | Long-term Contract | Outside IR35 | Competitive Rate | Current SC/DV Clearance Required

The Opportunity

We're recruiting a Senior Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (EC&I) Engineer on a long-term contract basis to join a leading nuclear services company delivering critical programmes across the UK's nuclear sector. You'll produce design studies and manufacturing designs for complex nuclear projects, working within multi-disciplinary design teams and taking responsibility for equipment design delivery.

This is a hands-on technical role for an experienced EC&I engineer who wants to stay at the forefront of nuclear design. You'll work on challenging projects ranging from decommissioning and waste management through to broader nuclear consultancy, design and engineering services. You'll produce high-quality design documentation, manage technical risk, and ensure all designs meet rigorous nuclear industry standards and safety requirements.

The Company

The organisation has been delivering critical work programmes across the nuclear industry for over 40 years. They now have a broad customer base and provide a comprehensive spectrum of services across the entire nuclear project lifecycle—from expert consultancy and R&D, through engineering design, to site installation services and high-hazard physical decommissioning works. Work is delivered across their own offices, purpose-built facilities and nuclear sites throughout the UK.

What You'll Be Doing

EC&I Design & Delivery

  • Produce EC&I design concepts including Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), Block Control Diagrams (BCDs), cable schedules, layouts and specifications
  • Develop control system designs using relevant hardware and software knowledge
  • Produce designs that conform to British and European standards (BSEN 61508 & 61511) and client requirements
  • Ensure designs address operability, maintainability, and safety issues
  • Create and maintain technical files in accordance with Quality Management Systems
  • Produce designs that meet project programmes and budgets

Functional Safety & Technical Documentation

  • Design and produce functional safety documentation including Functional Design Specifications (FDS), Safety Instrumented System Design Documents (SIDD) and Functional Safety Plans
  • Produce design justification reports that demonstrate how designs mitigate all identified technical risks
  • Author engineering reports including basis of design, substantiation and calculation reports
  • Produce commissioning documentation such as Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT)

Technical Delivery & Quality

  • Check in-house and subcontract drawing documentation for compliance and technical accuracy
  • Manage subcontract suppliers and coordinate with external design resources
  • Interpret and create EC&I engineering drawings using AutoCAD
  • Produce technical specifications and works instructions that enable accurate manufacturing
  • Attend and witness commissioning activities as required

Technical Competency & Development

  • Maintain personal, professional and technical competency through continued professional development
  • Understand technical aspects of projects and develop engineering solutions with in-house specialists and supply chain partners
  • Consolidate and present design and engineering documentation for internal approvals and client presentation

About You

Essential Experience & Qualifications

  • Current SC/DV security clearance — you must hold current clearance to be considered
  • Relevant Engineering Degree, HNC or demonstrable equivalent engineering experience
  • Broad-based engineering experience in design and manufacturing
  • Design of electrical systems and low voltage control gear
  • Functional Safety expertise including BSEN 61508 & 61511 standards
  • Control systems design experience — hardware and software knowledge
  • EC&I design experience with proven track record on complex projects
  • Strong technical writing — able to produce detailed engineering reports and documentation
  • Competent MS Office user with strong capability in AutoCAD for engineering drawings
  • IOSH Managing Safely or Level 2 Health & Safety in the Workplace (or equivalent)

Desirable

  • Safety interlock design experience
  • HVAC control systems design experience
  • Experience in nuclear sector or high-hazard industries
  • Experience with design for manufacturing and commissioning
  • Subcontract supplier management experience
  • Experience producing commissioning documentation (FAT/SAT)

The Role in Practice

You'll work on a hybrid basis with 2 days every fortnight in the office, remaining days remote. Working on a 9-day working fortnight pattern. You'll join a multi-disciplinary design team and take responsibility for equipment design as delegated by the Integration Manager and/or Project Manager.

You'll work on a long-term contract basis, and the role can be outside the scope of IR35. This role offers genuine technical work on challenging nuclear projects, with the opportunity to develop your expertise in EC&I design within a supportive, collaborative environment that values technical excellence and professional development.
